Brian, from Rutland, Vermont, spent years working in manufacturing and warehouses before a major life event forced him to rethink his career.
“I had open-heart surgery, so I had to change what I did,” Brian shared. “Before I get a new job, I needed to figure out what I wanted to do, and GetSetUp has been the easiest way to learn new office skills.”
Through the Associates for Training and Development (A4TD), Brian gained access to GetSetUp, which has helped him explore new career paths, build confidence with technology, and develop skills for today’s workforce.
Brian initially joined GetSetUp to prepare for an office job, but his career aspirations evolved as he explored different courses.
“I started with GetSetUp’s orientation to learn how to access online classes and then moved on to technology classes—Word, Excel, and how to use a phone,” he said.
“For older adults, these are really important things to know.”
Eventually, Brian found himself drawn to a completely different field: truck driving.
“I took CDL truck driver classes, and my goal now is to drive,” he shared.
Plus, GetSetUp also introduced him to AI and ChatGPT, sparking his curiosity about how artificial intelligence can be applied in different fields.
“I took AI classes, and I asked the AI assistant a question once—the answer was really helpful,” he added. “I’d like to learn more about AI and new technology like ChatGPT.”
Like many older adults re-entering the workforce, Brian needed to update his tech skills.
“Classes are helping me learn pieces here and there that I didn’t know—Google Docs and Google Sheets were all new to me,” he said. “I also learned how to use Chromebooks, and that was great as a skill.”
One of his favorite classes was “How the Internet Works” with Wade. “I didn’t know what a lot of things meant—HTTP, URLs, LAN—and that class helped me understand it all,” Brian explained. “I liked that one a lot.”
His learning even extended to social media, a crucial tool for job searching and networking today.
“GetSetUp offers social media skills, and that’s good because people have to know that to survive in the world today,” he said. One of the most eye-opening classes for him was on email scams and internet safety. “I learned how to recognize scams, protect my computer, and develop better internet habits,” he shared.
Brian appreciates the flexibility of GetSetUp’s platform, which allows him to learn at his own pace. “I like the hour-long classes because I can track my progress and write them down on my time sheets,” he said.
He’s also taken both live and recorded classes but prefers having the option to rewatch lessons and take notes.
“I always learn something, even if it’s just one or two things,” he noted.
Using GetSetUp has also kept him active and engaged while transitioning careers.
“It’s good for keeping you active—through education,” he said. “It’s been great for motivation and learning how online classes work.”
Through A4TD and GetSetUp, Brian is gaining the confidence he needs to transition into a less physically demanding career.
“A4TD is a great prep area to get back to work,” he explained. “I’m used to physical, hardcore, stressful work in a fast-paced environment. Slowing down and learning through GetSetUp is helping me transition into a new kind of work.”
As he continues to learn, Brian hopes to see even more advanced classes added to the platform. “I’d love more on resume writing, job interviews, and motivation techniques,” he said. “A class on learning not to procrastinate would be great, too!”
Brian is grateful for the opportunities GetSetUp has provided. “Just in general, it has definitely improved my skills,” he said.
“It’s been a great way to learn, explore career options, and figure out my next step.”
With GetSetUp, Brian proves that it’s never too late to learn, adapt, and build a better future. Whether it’s technology, social media, or truck driving, he’s embracing lifelong learning and preparing for the next exciting chapter of his career.
