Before teaching high school, Bob had what many might consider a “dream job” — ice cream taster. Officially known as a food technologist, Bob spent 22 years conducting quality control (including tasting) for companies like Nestlé and Ralston Purina. His career included tasting a variety of products, from tomato sauce to pet food.

“I ate a lot. I had to learn to pace myself.”

After a while, Bob found the job less fulfilling and transitioned to teaching high school science. When he retired about three years ago, he sought part-time work and ended up teaching child actors in Hollywood, ensuring they met school requirements on set. Bob spends about one day a week on TV or movie sets like Crypt TV and Good Trouble, and he looks forward to returning after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Bob has been married for 43 years, has three grown daughters, and enjoys making sourdough bread. He and his wife have even started making soap together, hoping to sell it at local swap meets once they resume.

Teaching His Passions on GetSetUp

Bob brought his passion for sourdough bread baking to GetSetUp and now teaches Sourdough Bread Baking.

“I started teaching Medicare, but then we got asked to submit classes we are interested in teaching. Since then, I have tried to focus on subjects I’m interested in and have more experience with. Most of the classes I teach now are classes I’ve suggested - ones I’m passionate and excited about!”

Bob can't recall exactly how he discovered GetSetUp, perhaps through LinkedIn or a Google search. He found GetSetUp appealing because it allowed him to teach fun subjects of his choosing, with flexible hours that fit his schedule.

“I like teaching and I missed doing it when things shut down at the start of this year. It was during this time I thought about teaching online. I could find Biology or Chemistry classes, but I thought GetSetUp sounded more interesting. It allowed me to teach more fun subjects which I could pick. Plus, the hours are great and since you can pick and choose the ones that work for you, there is no real problem with scheduling.”

One of the aspects Bob enjoys most about GetSetUp is meeting new people from around the world.

“Once I had a whole class of learners from India. It was fun! It’s always fun to meet people from around the country and hear their experiences and the appreciation they have to be learning all these new things. People are very excited to be there.”

Both a Learner and a Guide

Although Bob is the guide in his classes, he acknowledges that he has much to learn from the participants as well.

“Adults have a lot to offer and a lot of experience. I try to get people to participate and ask to find out who has experience. I have a lot to learn and I’m not the ultimate expert in sourdough, for example. I want learners to know that I’m a learner too and looking to expand my knowledge. I appreciate when learners offer tips as they help my classes improve. Every class, someone has information I didn’t have before, and I add it to class notes. It makes them better.”

One of Bob’s favorite classes is Explore Your Genealogy, where he helps learners research their genealogy, a hobby of his. In one class, he introduced a woman to a free genealogy site, leading her to discover a wealth of information about her father.

“She got so excited and emotional. I was happy to be part of that discovery for her.”

Bob has also used genealogy to find a half-sister he never knew existed and trace his lineage back to the early settlers in America. Although his ancestor missed the Mayflower, Bob jokes that he might have simply "slept in that day and caught the second boat."

Bob’s extensive experience in genealogy research allows him to teach even seasoned researchers new tips and resources.

“People came in and didn’t know about resources. One lady came back and told me last week that after seeing the free site in my genealogy class, she spent seven hours on it and found family from 100 years ago. It’s great to give people that kind of experience.”

Bob loves meeting learners from all over the world in his various classes and helping them solve their problems.

“Some of the people are really curious and want to learn about all kinds of different things. It's always nice to be with people up for the challenge, willing to give it a try, and be open to it.”

When not teaching, you might find Bob playing classic rock on his keyboard, guitar, or mandolin, or riding his electric bike. He’s even considering teaching a class about electric bikes.
