Tod, a 65-year-old retiree in Athens, Georgia, discovered GetSetUp through his Aetna health insurance plan. This partnership allows him to access classes on GetSetUp, a dynamic learning and discovery platform for older adults, free of charge. Tod had previously attended a Tai Chi class at his local gym but found the in-person experience challenging due to his tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears. Online classes proved to be a more comfortable solution.

“GetSetUp helps provide relief from my tinnitus. One of the first classes I took on GetSetUp was Tai Chi. I needed that type of relaxing exercise."

Tai Chi with Ty Arnold

Among Tod's favorite instructors on GetSetUp is Ty Arnold, who teaches Tai Chi. Tod appreciates Ty's ability to make everyone feel at ease and his encouragement to perform movements in a way that feels right for each individual. This approach has been particularly reassuring for Tod, helping him feel confident in his practice.

“Ty isn’t a stickler for right or wrong. He’s very good at telling people to do it their way. I frequently see I’m doing things differently from him, and he has reassured me personally and the class as a whole. He says, ‘You do what you feel is right for you.’ He reminds us that he is there to guide us through the movements but not force us to do anything, and I like that,” Tod explained.

Tod quickly realized that GetSetUp offered much more than Tai Chi. He has taken classes on various topics, including positive thinking and mental wellness with Bernadette and other relaxing exercises. The knowledgeable and caring instructors, like Jane Stewart, have made a significant impact on his learning experience. Tod enjoys the flexibility of the platform, which allows him to see when classes are offered and fit them into his schedule easily.

Managing Tinnitus

Tod's tinnitus can be quite distracting, but he has developed strategies to manage it, including using a sound machine and controlling the volume of his TV. His special hearing aids, designed for people with tinnitus, also help significantly.

“Hearing aids are really good. Most people who get them think they are only for hearing problems, but when I first got them, it was for tinnitus. This is my fifth pair now, and they really help,” Tod noted.

The flare-up of his tinnitus after catching COVID during an Alaskan cruise made it even more critical for him to find effective coping mechanisms.

“I’m really glad I'm retired. I don’t think I could deal with work with my tinnitus at this level,” Tod said.

Taking classes on GetSetUp provides a welcome distraction from his tinnitus and allows him to interact with others from the comfort of his home.

Interacting with GetSetUp

Tod regularly joins Zoom classes on GetSetUp, appreciating the high-quality video and audio. He values the ability to interact with instructors and classmates through chat or by unmuting to ask questions. This interactivity, combined with the convenience of participating from home, makes the platform ideal for his needs.

“I left the house yesterday for the first time in a while and was concerned about how I would interact with another person because of my tinnitus. I didn’t have any problems, and it’s nice to know I’m starting to be able to interact again with the world around me in addition to online classes,” Tod shared.

Tod's experience with GetSetUp has been overwhelmingly positive. The platform offers a wide range of classes that help him manage his tinnitus and engage in relaxing, beneficial activities.

“GetSetUp is helping me to feel more together,” Tod concluded.
