Ellen Jaffe Jones: Breaking Barriers at the National Senior Games

GetSetUp’s very first sponsored athlete, Ellen Jaffe Jones, was among nearly 12,000 athletes who competed in 21 sports at this year's National Senior Games in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Ellen competed in the track and field category and was the only woman in her age group, 70-74, to complete all seven races. Impressive!

The group’s races included:

  • 50-meter dash
  • 100-meter dash
  • 200-meter dash
  • 400-meter dash
  • 800-meter dash
  • 1500-meter dash
  • 4 x 100-meter relay race

Even more exciting, Ellen medaled in two races, winning bronze in the 800-meter and silver in the relay race!

Debunking Myths and Inspiring Others

By completing all seven events, Ellen, who has followed a vegan diet for more than 40 years, dispels the myth that vegans don't have the stamina to run competitively. Her achievements not only showcase her incredible athleticism but also inspire others to pursue their dreams regardless of age or diet.

Ellen wasn’t alone in her athletic pursuits—other amazing older adult athletes showcased their talents in events like the shot put, long jump, triple jump, javelin, high jump, discus, and hammer. There was a strong sense of camaraderie among the athletes, who genuinely wished the best for each other.

Inspiring the GetSetUp Community

From 50-year-old distance runners breaking national records to 99-year-old sprinters, the takeaway is that today is the perfect day to go after your dreams, inspire others, and maybe even become a sponsored athlete, just like Ellen.

Be sure to attend Ellen’s upcoming Guest Speaker session, Finding Inspiration To Live My Best Life, on May 24th. She’ll dive deep into her journey of aging better, becoming a vegan athlete, and authoring five nutrition books, including Eat Vegan on $4.00 a Day.

Congratulations, Ellen! You are a true inspiration to us all!
