Vermont has been committed to fostering health, wellness, and social connectedness among its older adult population. To combat social isolation, loneliness, improve digital literacy, and support aging in place, Vermont partnered with GetSetUp to provide online classes tailored to the needs of its seniors.

Objective

Reduce social isolation, loneliness, enhance digital and financial literacy, and promote health and wellness among Vermont’s older adults through a comprehensive online learning platform.

Key Challenges

  • There is a need for health and wellness programs that support independent living.
  • Limited digital literacy creates barriers to accessing online resources and services.
  • High levels of social isolation and loneliness, particularly in rural areas.
  • Aging in place skills to help people age independently with financial and social health.

Solution

Vermont introduced GetSetUp to offer over 5,000 classes, focusing on the most critical areas for older adults. The most popular classes were fitness but residents also enjoyed classes on:

  • Digital Literacy: Classes like iPad Basics and New Member Orientation help build confidence in using technology.
  • Physical Health: Popular classes such as Tai Chi for Arthritis, Low Impact Aerobics, and Chair Yoga provide seniors with accessible fitness routines to maintain their health.
  • Mental and Emotional Well-being: Stretch and Destress Yoga and Tai Chi Shibashi offer stress relief and mental clarity.
  • Practical Life Management: Organizing Your Important Information empowers seniors to manage their personal affairs effectively.
  • Nutrition: Healthy Cooking for Seniors and Nutrition for Aging provide valuable guidance on meal planning and maintaining a balanced diet, supporting overall health and well-being.
