GetSetUp launched in India less than two months ago and has since been growing exponentially. The platform empowers older adults by providing a socially interactive online learning environment where classes are taught by peers. Every learner plays an integral role in the learning process, fostering a community of shared experiences and knowledge.
A Record-Breaking Holiday Event
While many classes at GetSetUp attract smaller groups interested in health, well-being, or technology, the platform's largest event to date was the India Carol Singing event. This event was so popular that it couldn't be capped, especially during a pandemic season when the ability to celebrate with friends was a much-needed positive experience. Over 75 people from across India and the world joined this exciting event to share and spread holiday cheer. Many participants came dressed in festive attire, embracing the holiday spirit.
The U.S. also hosted its own holiday event later that day, inviting everyone to join in the fun.
Special Guest Performances
The event featured special performances of Christmas carols in seven different languages, including:
- JELC Choir Group from Orissa
- Clement Sastriar playing violin while Monica sang a carol in Tamil
- Kartik Subramaniyan presenting a Bengali carol
- Kartar & Fly playing guitar and sharing a carol in Manali
- Vanita & Vijay Salvi performing a Marathi carol while playing the tabla
- Elaine Parmar singing a Gujarati carol with her granddaughter occasionally joining in
- Sabrina sharing the Spanish classic carol Feliz Navidad
The event also included classic English Christmas songs like “Merry Christmas” and “Joy to the World,” which were played on YouTube so the entire group could sing along.
Beyond Caroling: A Full Holiday Experience
The holiday celebrations extended beyond carols, as learners shared well-wishes, stories, holiday recipes, and even showcased their Christmas decorations and festive attire. Lynette explained the legends of the fir tree and the story of hope behind the classic Christmas tree image, highlighting tales like the legend of tinsel, which originated from spider webs glistening in the light of a fir tree.
Sarita shared a healthy holiday recipe for creating marzipan, walking participants through the steps and showing the finished product. The session concluded with the group singing Silent Night in the dark, lit only by candlelight, capturing the magic of the season.
Learners and guides also shared pre-recorded video messages wishing the GetSetUp community a happy holiday season. Even after the scheduled hour ended, many participants stayed on the Zoom call for an 'after-party,' enjoying each other’s company.

GetSetUp has enabled learners to connect with peers across the country during a year when travel and in-person gatherings were limited. The ability to celebrate together, share in video and song, and build connections despite physical distance has been invaluable for these learners.
