Mary Delia, 54, lives in a senior living community in Connecticut and is using GetSetUp to enhance her skills and prepare for a new career in caregiving. Through the Associates for Training and Development (A4TD) program, Mary has been able to access classes on GetSetUp that have given her both the confidence and expertise to start a job at a local medical facility.
“Within a month, I’ll be working at a place where people donate wheelchairs, commodes, and canes, and GetSetUp is helping me learn skills that benefit me and get a job,” Mary shared.
Her goal is to become a home healthcare aide, where she can support the elderly and people with disabilities. Taking classes through GetSetUp has opened up a world of learning for Mary, especially in technology and healthcare.
“When I first started, I didn’t have much experience with computers, but now, thanks to GetSetUp computer classes, I know what to do if there’s a problem with my browser or if I get logged out,” she said.
She credits GetSetUp Guides like Kevin Miller and Wade with making technology accessible. They have helped her learn to use One Drive, Excel, and Word and set up Gmail.
“Kevin and Wade are really great speakers, and I’ve learned a lot about computers and technology. When I have a problem, I now have the skills to try to solve it myself,” she explained.
These technology skills have been especially helpful as she prepares for her new role. Mary’s training with A4TD included both GetSetUp and other online platforms, like Coursera, where she studied home healthcare and caregiving basics.
“On Coursera, I was doing classes on home healthcare and CNA work, and with GetSetUp, I’ve taken classes on dementia, Medicare, and long-term care,” she said.
This mix of resources has given her a well-rounded understanding of the healthcare field and has strengthened her confidence in caregiving.
Financial and Wellness Benefits
In addition to caregiving, Mary has found GetSetUp’s classes on financial wellness extremely beneficial.
“I’ve taken financial wellness classes on net worth and long-term insurance,” she noted.
The financial literacy skills she’s gained have helped her take better control of her finances and plan for her future. While Mary often takes technology classes to build her computer skills, she also appreciates the classes on health and wellness, which she finds both useful and motivating.
“Learning about Medicare and health has helped me. I’d like to see even more classes on Medicare, especially longer ones,” she said.
She’s also learned valuable skills on scams and internet security, which have been essential as she navigates the online world.
“I learned a lot about scams and web browsers, and it’s been really helpful in enhancing my tech skills.”
The flexibility of GetSetUp’s classes fits perfectly into Mary’s busy schedule. She often watches classes on her laptop in the quiet of her room, where she can take notes and focus on learning.
“I tend to take a lot of technology classes in my room, where it’s quiet, and sometimes I watch them on my phone when I’m at the library,” she said.
Through her work with A4TD, Mary will be able to stay in the program for up to two years, giving her time to build and refine her skills.
“The program allows me to train through Coursera, GetSetUp, and other platforms, and then use those skills and classes on GetSetUp to build my resume and apply for new jobs,” she explained.
Her long-term goal is to take these skills to a hospital or home healthcare setting, where she can continue to make a difference in people’s lives. She sees the need for more caregivers since she lives in a senior living facility and sees the growing demand for support to care for some of the older residents who need more support.
For Mary, GetSetUp has been more than just a learning platform—it’s been a tool to help her achieve her career goals and improve her well-being.
“I’d say my health and well-being have improved since I started learning here,” she said. “Just learning about my financial well-being and skills that benefit me—it’s been incredibly helpful.”
Mary’s journey with GetSetUp, supported by A4TD, is helping her take the next steps toward a fulfilling career in caregiving. As she continues to learn and grow, she’s building the skills and confidence to make a meaningful impact in her community.
