Ellen, a retired high school teacher and dedicated blood drive coordinator from Holly, Michigan, has been running local blood drives for nearly a decade. What started as an idea to have one blood drive at her church instead of in a cold bus, blossomed into a monthly event. During the pandemic, she sought ways to expand her skills and discovered GetSetUp thanks to its partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services which offers classes free of charge to its older residents.

“I was looking for more strategies for marketing my blood drives and also for fun and social things to do. That’s how I found GetSetUp,” Ellen explained.

The platform became a regular resource for her, offering the tools she needed to grow both personally and professionally. Ellen first explored GetSetUp through fun and social classes like Kahoot with Cyndi, but it wasn’t long before she delved into more technical subjects.

“I started with basic tech skills, learning how to use Instagram, my Android phone, Gmail, and OneDrive,” she shared.

As someone responsible for organizing frequent blood drives in her community, Ellen needed to upskill in marketing, branding, and website building.

“Kevin Miller’s classes on marketing and building websites are the ones I listen to the most now,” she said.

Thanks to Kevin’s step-by-step teaching, Ellen successfully built her website, hollyblooddrives.org, which she uses to promote her events.

“The first time I built my website, it took me three times to figure out how to get my domain name with Google Sites,” Ellen recalled. “I like the GetSetUp recordings because I can go back and listen step by step.”

With Kevin’s guidance, Ellen also learned about time management and using tools like Canva to create promotional materials. Now she’s juggling her website, Facebook page, and Instagram, all dedicated to promoting the blood drive she runs.

“Kevin’s classes are great because he’s on the screen, and I can follow along easily,” she added.

Running monthly blood drives—some on Tuesdays and others on Saturdays—keeps Ellen busy, but GetSetUp’s flexible on-demand and pre-recorded classes fit perfectly into her schedule.

“It’s nice to know I can cook or take my laptop into the kitchen, listen to a class, and back up if I need to,” she explained.

This flexibility is especially helpful when balancing her blood drive responsibilities with her personal interests.

Beyond Tech and Business Skills

Aside from tech, Ellen has explored wellness and healthy living classes that have improved her overall health and well-being.

“I’ve taken classes on healthy eating, yoga, and gratitude,” she said proudly. “Definitively, my health and well-being have improved thanks to GetSetUp. Just knowing these classes are available is great—it’s been mentally helpful to me not just for learning but knowing the resources are easily accessible.”

GetSetUp has become her go-to resource for a range of topics, from marketing to aging resources and self-care. Back in 2006 when she was a caregiver she relied on word of mouth to learn about caregiving resources. Now she would go to GetSetUp first to see what is available. That’s what she did most recently when she was looking for help with email marketing, and found it no surprise that there were classes on that topic ready to support her needs!

As someone deeply committed to community service, Ellen has been using the skills she learned on GetSetUp to grow her outreach.

“With my blood drives, it challenges me to get out and do more in the media, public speaking and marketing,” she said.

In fact, it took her two years to build the confidence to speak for two minutes at the Chamber of Commerce, but with practice and the tools she needed to succeed, she’s a regular.

“Now I give something to raffle off and talk for two minutes regularly in these meetings,” she shared.

Ellen is also enthusiastic about helping others discover GetSetUp’s benefits.

“There are so many opportunities, and people are missing out,” she said. “People need to check out GetSetUp—they don’t have to watch TV all day. If they have a laptop or a phone, they can take a class.”

She’s even considering ways to promote GetSetUp at local senior centers to reach more older adults in her community. She knows that Michigan winters can be long and learning is a great activity to help pass the time for people with limited options to get out and about in the cold (and sometimes snowy) winter months.

As Ellen looks to the future, she’s eager to continue expanding her knowledge and skills through GetSetUp.

“The flexibility to go to GetSetUp as a resource is really helpful,” she said.

Whether it’s learning how to market her nonprofit work or taking a decluttering class for fun, GetSetUp has provided Ellen with invaluable tools for personal growth and community impact.

“I’ve learned so much, and seeing other people at the same level learning along with me makes it even better. I know that I am not alone and there are others interested in learning too at the same level. Often I even learn from other people in the classes,” she concluded.

For Ellen, GetSetUp is more than just a learning platform—it’s a community that’s helping her make a lasting difference.
