Kim, 55, who lives in rural Idaho, discovered GetSetUp through her participation in Easterseals and the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Living far from major resources and without a strong local support network, she found GetSetUp to be an essential connection to learning and having a sense of community.

“GetSetUp is pretty easy to use,” Kim said. “It’s been a learning experience for me to be able to get on and go through some of these classes.”

Kim’s interests are varied—she’s passionate about arts and crafts, improving her computer skills, and focusing on her health and well-being. Initially, she was drawn to the art classes

“I do a lot of coloring and have all kinds of things for arts and crafts. I have coloring books galore,” Kim shared.

She loves working with colored pencils and learning new techniques for shading and combining colors.

“I’ve been taking the colored pencil classes, and I want more on shading,” she noted.

Kim has a creative spirit and plans to sell her artwork at local exhibitions.

“We have an exhibition hall here in Bruno, and I figured I could sell my pictures for five dollars without a frame, maybe ten with a frame,” she said, already in an entrepreneurial spirit.

Learning Core Skills To Re-Enter The Workforce

But Kim’s journey with GetSetUp doesn’t stop at art. She’s also focused on learning the skills she needs to return to the workforce.

“Right now, I’m looking at a lot of stuff to do with Excel and Microsoft, and I really need more advanced classes for that,” she explained. “I’m hoping to get back into a receptionist or secretarial role, and I need to learn the extra things that are important for those jobs.”

GetSetUp’s classes are helping her brush up on computer programs, especially Excel, and other desktop skills that she needs to improve her career prospects. The local Easterseals center is over 20 miles away, so it has been helpful that Kim can participate in learning activities through GetSetUp.

She’s applied to a few places already, and learning technology has been important to help her avoid scams. Since she can’t travel at this time, she had been accepted to a remote position, that seemed like a dream - until it turned out to be a scam. The job was supposed to pay $35 dollars an hour, and even sent her a check for the $9,000 dollars that was supposed to cover the cost of some of the work she had done, a computer, and other job-related things.

“I got the fake check on a Saturday and went to put it into the bank. My ‘employer’ asked me to take a picture of the bank kiosk as I deposited the check. He probably wanted a picture and video of it all to steal my password, but something didn’t seem right. I did deposit the check and then I remembered I hadn’t signed it. The scammer wanted me to send him money, but I waited. It was a good thing I did. I realized that it was a fraud when the bank kept it.”

Kim let the company know that the scammer was using them for their scam, but unfortunately, there wasn’t a good resolution. She didn’t have a job, nor was paid for the work she did, and was back to the drawing board. She learned an important lesson on following her own intuition and also on the need to be careful of scams even when applying for jobs.

Helping To Create Connections

While Kim works to update her technical skills, she also finds comfort in GetSetUp’s community. Living in a remote area where neighbors are miles apart, it can be isolating.

“I have no friends around here,” she shared, “so participating directly from my home has been really important.”

Even though she’s physically distant, GetSetUp allows Kim to connect with instructors and other learners.

“I’ve gone to Bernadette’s [mental enrichment] classes, and those have helped me with communication and assertiveness,” she said, emphasizing how valuable these skills are for her confidence.

Kim’s participation in Easterseals not only provided her with access to GetSetUp but also a refurbished computer to make learning easier.

“I got a computer from Easterseals, and it’s been really helpful,” she said.

From this setup, Kim has been able to expand her learning to new areas, including health and wellness, which have become increasingly important to her.

“I have high cholesterol, I’m pre-diabetic, and I’m obese,” she admitted. “I really want to take health and wellness classes to help manage these issues.”

Despite the challenges, Kim remains optimistic and motivated.

“Learning is lifelong,” she says, “and GetSetUp has so much to offer that I haven’t explored enough yet, but I’m looking forward to it.”

The flexibility of on-demand classes suits her well, allowing her to learn at her own pace.

“The variety of classes set GetSetUp apart, and it’s nice to be able to do it in the convenience of my home.”

Kim hopes that others in her situation—those who may feel isolated or who are struggling to re-enter the workforce—will find out about resources like GetSetUp through programs like Easterseals and SCSEP.

“It’s great that they promote these classes; I’ve learned so much,” she said.

She also looks forward to diving into more wellness and mental health topics, mentioning her struggles with anxiety, depression, and a skin condition that affects her confidence.

“These things are not often talked about, but they’re important,” she emphasized.

Ultimately, Kim’s experience with GetSetUp has been empowering, giving her a sense of purpose and a path forward.

“I’m just starting, but every class helps me feel a little more prepared, a little more connected,” she said.

Whether it’s working on her artistic skills or preparing to rejoin the workforce, GetSetUp, in partnership with Easterseals and SCSEP, is providing Kim with tools, knowledge, and hope for the future.
