For Lorelei, a retired nurse with over 40 years of nursing experience across diverse disciplines, GetSetUp has been a lifeline. Living in a rural part of Michigan, she discovered the platform through its partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which benefits her as a Michigan resident.

“I tell you, it’s probably the best thing that has happened to me in my life,” she says.

Since then, she’s been using GetSetUp to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with others, all from the comfort of her home.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lorelei needed virtual options to stay engaged, especially since she and her husband live in the rural Huron Woods area.

“I’m 72, and I live about 20 miles from any available senior center, so virtual was the only way for me to participate,” she shared.

Thankfully, she and her husband had recently installed Wi-Fi, which made accessing GetSetUp classes possible.

“If we didn’t have Wi-Fi, we wouldn’t be able to connect,” she noted, highlighting the importance of digital access in rural areas.

GetSetUp Classes For Physical Recovery

Lorelei’s journey with GetSetUp began with classes focused on balance and yoga, which she found essential as she recovered from a broken arm.

“Some of my movement surprised my orthopedic surgeon; he didn’t believe I’d get back all my movement, and I got almost 100%. I credit some of GetSetUp’s classes,” she said proudly.

She especially enjoys classes led by Ty, who integrates insights on balance, hand-eye coordination, and the changes that come with aging.

As an active volunteer, Lorelei is passionate about sharing GetSetUp with others. She serves on several boards, including the Regional Area on Aging for Region 9 Council and also the Michigan Senior Advocacy Council and formerly was on the board of her local senior center. She often talks about the program during her outreach efforts.

“Ty offers medically insightful things—it’s not just exercises. He shares how our balance changes as we get older, and he’s good at filtering in mindset changes, too.”

Lorelei also loves stress management, yoga, and meditation classes, which help her stay positive despite her limitations due to diabetes.

“One of my favorite guides is Twyla. She has a way to frame things that helps me stay positive,” Lorelei explained.

For her, the variety of styles—from Kundalini Yoga to Tai Chi—offers not just physical benefits but also mental and emotional support.

“I don’t ever want to fall again, and GetSetUp helps me maintain my balance and stay strong,” she emphasized.

She likes that she can attend classes, especially on her schedule and timeline. This has helped ensure she regularly attends classes. Watching classes on demand has also helped her gain confidence.

“I don't like to go into fitness classes cause my joints make more music than the music,” she says with a friendly laugh.

The fact that she can take the classes with her when she travels with her husband and do them from her iPad anywhere has helped her stay in the habit of taking classes. Plus, the on-demand sessions are often easier for her to watch, considering her rural location.

“Our Wi-Fi is still not so great where I am, so I can’t always do a live video stream of any kind. That’s the beauty of GetSetUp: I don't have to depend on live stream videos but can watch on-demand classes even with my limited connection.”

She hopes that, at some point, her local library will open a space where she can go to take classes and sessions with other people, adding an additional social layer to GetSetUp classes.

Sharing GetSetUp Resources With The Community

She has become a strong advocate for senior advocacy and federal healthcare programs to benefit older adults.

“GetSetUp is so wonderful since I can share it with people I meet when I’m volunteering, especially for those at home who don’t see other people,” she said.

Lorelei also sees the value of GetSetUp’s classes on topics like veterans’ benefits and fraud prevention, which have been beneficial for her husband, a Purple Heart recipient.

“The veterans’ classes have been great for us to review. The classes include the benefits that are available, who is eligible, and how you can contact your local Veterans’ branch. It keeps us from having to drive 30 miles to a veterans’ office to ask simple questions, and my husband can get this information on his own time and schedule,” Lorelei explained.

Lorelei said that when she showed her husband the GetSetUp Veteran’s Resources in Michigan classes, they helped spark an interest in changes to Veterans' benefits since he doesn’t attend many local gatherings.

“The classes helped prompt my husband to ask questions about resources he didn’t know he was eligible for, and he went to the local Veterans' agency to sign up for benefits.”

Navigating GetSetUp was surprisingly easy for Lorelei, who doesn’t consider herself tech-savvy.

“Navigating on GetSetUp is so simple. Once I signed up, it was clear and easy to click on the classes and guides. It’s so easy to navigate, and if it’s simple, anyone can do it,” she said.

She regularly learns more about technology with GetSetUp. Recently, she couldn’t understand why her class wasn’t loading. When she requested assistance from Helen, the in-class teaching assistant, she was thrilled to learn something new and get a helpful answer.

“I never knew I had to clean my cache. The chat person explained to me not only why I had to do this but also walked me through step by step how to do it so I could get my sessions to load correctly again.”

Lorelei continues to advocate for GetSetUp and is eager to see more classes on hot topics like Medicare and scam prevention, which are crucial for seniors navigating complex systems.

“We had a gentleman at a regional meeting who shared how he was scammed by a phone call. All they had was his name, which he told him when he answered the phone, and they were able to get other data somehow. They ordered catheters in his name, and he said yes to having healthcare. He lost a couple of hundred dollars.”

Lorelei sees a strong need to educate seniors on the most common scams, including new healthcare scams like this, to help them avoid becoming victims. She’s pleased to see that GetSetUp regularly updates its Fraud and Scam Prevention classes.

“I can’t say enough about GetSetUp’s  whole program—it’s better than sliced bread, as the old adage goes,” she concluded.

Thanks to the partnership between GetSetUp and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Lorelei’s experience with GetSetUp has enriched her life and allowed her to give back to her community in meaningful ways.

“I’m learning more on this site than I ever thought possible,” she said, reflecting on her lifelong learning and connection journey.
