For Lorraine, a 60-year-old from Westchester, a suburb of NYC, GetSetUp has been a transformative resource provided through the New York State Office for the Aging’s partnership with GetSetUp. Lorraine was introduced to the platform through a recommendation on NextDoor, and she quickly found herself immersed in various classes that have enriched her life.

Lorraine’s journey with GetSetUp began just a few months ago with her love for travel.

“It was one of Sue’s travel classes that first caught my interest, and I like the exercise classes with Stacey,” she shares. These fitness classes have become a part of her daily routine, helping her stay active and healthy.

“My steps have increased tremendously. I don’t love to walk, but these classes encourage me to keep moving and not just sit and veg out.” She tries to attend a couple each night to ensure she stays active.

As a physical therapist working with preschool children, Lorraine understands the importance of staying fit.

“I need to stay fit to keep up with my job,” she explains.

Exercise that Meets Diverse Aging Needs

The exercise classes on GetSetUp, which range from low to high energy, provide clear instructions and cater to older adults, making them accessible and effective. She often struggles to keep up with live fitness sessions at gyms, so she prefers GetSetUp fitness classes where she can select to be off-camera. Plus, she appreciates that fitness classes offer different ways to attend based on each person’s abilities.

“Classes are geared towards older adults, and some of the fitness classes are a bit slower than others. The instructors are all knowledgeable, and each brings a different energy and focus to their classes.  I tend to pick the ones that are more high-energy, but sometimes a more gentle pace is nice too.”

She believes the instructors are excellent and clear, and that’s speaking with her expertise as a physical therapist.

“The Guides go over instructions so that they are clear. They remind participants to follow doctors' orders and offer adaptations based on different mobility levels.”

She believes that GetSetUp classes, especially the health and wellness classes, would benefit all older adults over 50 and that health plans like Medicare and her husband’s Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield could benefit from offering them as a service.

Exploring Music and Cooking as a Couple

In addition to fitness, Lorraine and her husband enjoy Mike Smith’s classical music classes.

“There is something about him that draws us right in and we love the musical journeys he takes us on,” she notes.

These classes offer a relaxing and enriching experience, adding variety to their routine.

Cooking classes have also been a highlight for Lorraine

“I’ve liked quite a few of them, especially those by Twyla and Vanessa,” she says.

She has tried new recipes, including salmon, healthy muffins, and two-ingredient cookies, gaining valuable cooking skills and healthier eating habits. As a diabetic, Lorraine finds these classes particularly beneficial, and she hopes for more sessions focused on managing diabetes, especially when dining out.

Financially Viable Ways To Stay Healthy

GetSetUp’s health benefits and free-of-cost classes are a significant advantage for Lorraine.

“The exercise classes are very valuable, as the cheapest in-person session at a local gym can cost $15-20,” she explains.

The flexibility to take classes live or on-demand fits her busy schedule, ensuring she can continue learning and staying active without any financial burden. In the past, she was also a caregiver for her mother. At the time she had to do a lot of research to understand the programs and services offered to help support her in her caregiving journey.

Lorraine appreciates the platform’s user-friendly nature. She accesses classes on her laptop and phone. “It would be nice if there were an app in the future, but it’s easy to access classes,” she notes.

Despite her busy life, Lorraine finds time to participate in a variety of classes, from Spanish lessons to sessions on managing diabetes. She often watches classes on demand to fit classes into her busy schedule, but when she has time, she enjoys participating in live virtual classes.

“I think you guys are doing a great job. There is something for everyone, and I find classes that interest me every day,” she concludes.

Through GetSetUp, Lorraine has found a supportive community, improved her fitness, and embraced new hobbies, helping to make her free time  full of learning and discovery.
