Mary, a lifelong resident of Olean, New York, retired after 34 years working in either logistics or purchasing . Growing up in a non-technical era, her exposure to technology was limited to what she needed on the job. Now, through GetSetUp and the support of the New York State Office for Aging (NYSOFA), Mary has embraced technology and made it an essential part of her daily life.
“I really like GetSetUp, especially the tech classes,” Mary shared. “It’s great for learning about what’s new in the tech world.”
She’s taken classes on Gmail, Android phones, and Chromebooks, all of which have enhanced her confidence and capabilities.
“I had to learn Zoom during COVID, and that was probably the best class for me because so many meetings are still on Zoom. That skill has been really helpful.”
A Journey into Tech
Mary recently upgraded her devices, including a new Google Pixel phone and a Chromebook. GetSetUp has been instrumental in helping her get the most out of her latest technology.
“My favorite class is the Chromebook class,” she said. “It gave me helpful hints, and I use what I learned every day.”
Similarly, refreshers on Android phones have helped her with her new Google Pixel.
“I reinforce what I’ve learned and keep up with new features—it’s been so helpful.”
While she prefers live classes for their interactivity, Mary also appreciates the flexibility of recorded sessions.
“I’ve done both live and recorded, but I prefer live because you can ask questions and get feedback. The smaller class sizes make it easier to get personalized help.”
Exploring New Interests
In addition to tech, Mary has explored GetSetUp’s healthy cooking classes, which align with her focus on health and wellness.
“I’m not a baker, so I like the simple, healthy recipes they offer,” she said.
She’s also dabbled in other topics, such as artificial intelligence, which has piqued her curiosity.
“AI and ChatGPT are newer areas I’ve been exploring, and I’m always searching for more advanced classes to keep up with the latest technology changes.”
Mary appreciates that GetSetUp caters to different skill levels.
“The variety and quality of the instructors are excellent,” she said. “I really enjoy teachers like Wade—they’re engaging and relatable.”
A Lifeline During COVID
Mary first discovered GetSetUp during the pandemic, thanks to her involvement with the Enchanted Mountains Village Group.
“It was during COVID that I started hearing about GetSetUp through emails and recommendations from the group,” she recalled.
The platform became a vital resource for learning and staying connected.
“It’s free, thanks to the NYSOFA, easy to access, and there’s so much variety,” she said.
Looking Ahead
As Mary continues to explore GetSetUp, she’s excited about new opportunities to expand her knowledge.
“I enjoy looking at GetSetUp all the time,” she said. “It’s been great to have access to these classes through the NYSOFA, and I’m always finding something new to learn.”
