Michelle, 71, a retired graphic designer living in Colorado Springs, first heard about GetSetUp through her Medicare Advantage plan. For Michelle, GetSetUp has been a crucial part of her wellness routine, helping her cope with the long-term effects of COVID-19.
“I had COVID last November, and now the chronic fatigue is kicking my butt,” she shared.
The ability to access classes on her terms has provided her with a much-needed way to stay active and creative despite health challenges. Four years ago, Michelle began practicing chair yoga and quickly switched to mat yoga soon after, which quickly became a powerful part of her life.
“Yoga makes you very strong, and I still can do most of it,” she said.
She first experimented with yoga through SilverSneakers, but GetSetUp’s variety of yoga and other offerings captured her interest.
“I started with art on GetSetUp, and that’s what first piqued my interest,” she explained.
Although some classes were a bit basic for her, they gave her the push to dive back into creativity, especially through watercolor.
“For me, it’s like meditation. I want to get back to doing something creative because it really helps my mind.”
Michelle’s favorite class remains yoga, which she says benefits her body and mental health.
“I love yoga—it’s not just good for your body but also for your mind,” she explained.
The flexibility of GetSetUp’s schedule is particularly valuable for Michelle, who finds herself juggling doctors’ appointments and dealing with unpredictable energy levels due to long COVID.
“I have chronic fatigue, so some days are better than others. The advantage of GetSetUp is if I’m feeling up to it, I can do a class at home instead of going somewhere,” she said. “And if I have the energy to do the yoga class, I can do it at home, which is much easier for me.”
The on-demand classes have made it even more accessible for Michelle. She enjoyed taking classes at her local senior center, but there was a cost involved, and with her illness, she wasn’t able to attend, so she had to stop going.
“Now that I know I can attend classes on demand, I’ll probably be more likely to do them at home,” she said.
The convenience of taking a class whenever she feels ready has been empowering.
“It’s convenient for someone who is sick to be able to do classes at home. I know I have to take care of myself, and I have to force myself to do it more, especially since, at my age, you lose muscle mass really fast.”
Art, yoga, and wellness are key elements of Michelle’s daily routine. She also enjoys other classes like Tai Chi, which help her regain strength and balance.
“I have sleep issues, and yoga and Tai Chi really help. I even started a gratitude journal,” she shared.
Michelle feels it’s important not to let chronic illnesses define her.
“When you have lots of chronic illnesses, it’s easy to go downhill and stay there, but I don’t want to do that.”
Michelle’s journey with GetSetUp is not just about fitness or art—it’s about reclaiming her life.
“Let me tell you, you know you’re going to get old and die, but you don’t know all the things that will break,” she said with a laugh, quoting the famous line, “Getting old isn’t for sissies.”
Despite the challenges, she’s determined to make the most out of each day. The flexibility of GetSetUp through her Medicare Advantage health plan has been vital for Michelle’s ability to stay engaged.
“I haven’t done as many classes as I’d like because of doctor's appointments and fatigue, but that’s the beauty of it. I can say, ‘Today I’m feeling good,’ and then I go,” she explained.
Michelle also appreciates the ease of navigating the platform and finds the pre-recorded classes a great way to fit wellness into her unpredictable schedule.
“I’m glad about the pre-recorded classes—it makes it so much easier for me to get some more yoga.”
Michelle’s story is one of resilience. Through GetSetUp, she’s found ways to manage her health, stay active, and nurture her creativity. For Michelle, the classes aren’t just activities—they’re tools to maintain her independence and enhance her well-being, even on the toughest days.
