Sharon, a retired nurse from Chesapeake, Virginia, first discovered GetSetUp through the AARP during the pandemic. At the time, she was looking for ways to stay engaged and avoid isolation.
“It was really helpful, and I have learned so much,” she shared. Now, thanks to her local senior benefits program, she continues to use GetSetUp to enhance her technology skills, maintain her small travel business, and help other seniors navigate the digital world.
Mastering Technology for Work and Everyday Life
Sharon has taken a wide range of tech classes, from Google Docs and PowerPoint to mobile networks and cybersecurity.
“I mostly choose to do classes on technology because that’s what I need the most help with,” she said.
She finds the classes especially valuable because she doesn’t have younger family members around to help her with tech issues.
“If I have a tech question, I have to leave my home to ask someone, so these classes have been a lifesaver.”
One of her favorite classes was learning how to use her smartphone more effectively.
“I text a lot, and I’m a late-night person, so I don’t want to wake people up,” she said. “I learned how to schedule messages so they send at a better time, and when I show other seniors how to do it, they’re amazed!”
She also appreciated the practical guidance from GetSetUp instructors.
“One instructor took extra time after class to help me with a phone issue, so I didn’t have to go to the Verizon store,” she said. “They go out of their way to make sure we understand.”

Using Technology to Maintain Her Business
Beyond personal use, Sharon applies her GetSetUp knowledge to her small travel business, which she has been running for several decades.
“I type things out and make flyers, and the classes on Google Docs and PowerPoint have been really helpful,” she said.
“Right now, I’m helping people find discounted flights to International destinations and plan escorted tours for individuals and groups .She even took a class on building her first website, which she’s hoping will save her money.
“I was going to pay someone to do it for me, but then I thought, let me listen to this class first,” she said. “It gave me great ideas and resources.”
Staying Engaged and Sharing Knowledge
Sharon enjoys learning for the sake of staying sharp and engaged.
“People are amazed that at my age, in my 70s, I can use my cellphone so well,” she said. “At a wedding reception, my husband and I were on our phones in between, and people were shocked. A lot of seniors only know how to answer the phone, but I use Facebook, Instagram, and so much more!”
She’s passionate about helping other seniors invest in themselves.
“I tell a lot of people about GetSetUp, and I give them the information,” she said. “I can’t make them go there, but I always say: You have to invest in yourself—the information is out there!”
A Love for Learning and Future Goals
Sharon’s curiosity doesn’t stop with technology. She has taken classes on brain health, decluttering, and even converting CDs to digital files. She also wants to explore more about the differences between OneDrive and Apple cloud storage.
She enjoys the flexibility of GetSetUp’s classes, choosing on-demand sessions when she’s busy and live sessions when she wants to interact.
“I use my laptop for classes so I can take notes and see the demonstrations,” she said. “And I love that the instructors provide downloadable class notes.”
Grateful for the Opportunity
Through her local senior benefits program, Sharon has discovered a supportive learning community that helps her stay connected and confident in today’s digital world.
“The choices on GetSetUp are just amazing,” she said. “If you can’t find something that interests you, you’re not looking hard enough!”
She appreciates how instructors go above and beyond to make learning accessible.
“They are so patient, and they give practical advice you can use right away,” she said. “Hats off to the instructors for offering their skills—it’s so important!”
For Sharon, GetSetUp is more than just an online learning platform—it’s a lifeline for staying current, independent, and engaged.
“I think it’s an awesome program,” she said. “I’m so grateful to have access to it, and I’ll keep sharing it with others!”
