A retired RN originally from Massachusetts, Linda found her social life suffering after a cross-country move to Arizona. It was hard to start over in an unfamiliar city, and she was looking for a way to connect when she discovered GetSetUp. She started taking classes and ended up hosting her own by finding the courage to use her voice and share her knowledge with the GetSetUp community.
A Lifelong Quest for Knowledge
Linda has always been an avid learner. She started her career as an LPN and later decided to take the next step.
“I worked as an LPN in nursing homes for ten years but felt I was just performing tasks without really knowing why. I wanted to challenge myself, so I went back to school to become an RN. I worked at a major hospital for ten years and then at an elder service for eight.”
Then, life took an unpredictable turn. Her husband got sick, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her mom’s health was declining. She was forced into retirement because she had exhausted her Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) benefits. In addition to those upheavals, she moved across the country from Massachusetts to Arizona. Being alone in a new state waiting for her husband to be discharged from the hospital back in Massachusetts was a lonely time.
Overcoming Obstacles
Discouraged but not daunted, she discovered a listing for GetSetUp classes on her new town’s community page.
“It was like a gift from above. It’s never boring. I’m like a kid in a candy store. As a nurse, I know what’s ahead can be an awful sight, or it can be an enriching time in life. I choose to grow, share, learn, and keep my brain growing.”
The first class she took was Deb’s cooking class.
“I wanted to contribute something, so I sent Deb an email which led to a Zoom meeting. I’m camera shy, but I wanted to contribute. She was doing an Instant pot class, and she asked me to do some research for her. I spent eight hours learning all I could find on Instant Pots. I was so engrossed in knowing that I could help someone. I’m not a fossil anymore. I learned to scan and send the research to Deb, and she liked it.”
In Deb’s next Instant Pot class, she told Linda, “I’m not going to put you on the spot, but I’d like to ask you a question about your research.” Linda answered the question with confidence.
“Having the opportunity to have a voice was empowering. We all matter.”

Sharing Her Knowledge
She wanted to share that sentiment on the GetSetUp platform. After taking one of Norm’s classes, he encouraged her to host her own session.
“He said that I seemed to have what it takes to converse with people and asked if I would like to be a Community Host. I enjoyed crochet and decided to teach it because what good is knowledge if you can’t share it. I’ve hosted several sessions of All About Crochet now and am thinking, ‘Oh, my word, I did it.’”
Whether a beginner or a seasoned crochet crafter, you’ll feel welcome in her class. She greets participants warmly and immediately puts them at ease. Once instruction begins, she explains everything in a detailed and patient manner. Participants have plenty of opportunities to share projects they’re working on, helpful tips, and online resources for free patterns.
Linda’s designs are stunning and include elegant accessories, decorative pillows, and stuffed animals. Her enthusiasm for the craft is contagious. As she tells the Learners in her session,
“Our imaginations are going to take us great places…We’re starting something wonderful.”
She believes everybody has a learning style, and anyone can be taught. You just have to approach it in a way that is meaningful to them. She enjoys teaching, even though she’s an introvert.
“I’m very shy, but this platform has helped me. I tell myself, ‘Linda, you’ve got to do this because you need to talk about what you’re passionate about.’”
Although the way hasn’t always been smooth—getting an education while raising two children, coping with illness, and job loss—Linda has persevered. And she’s helped not only herself but everyone she interacts with on GetSetUp.
