While interviewing Sean Mauser of Avida Homecare, he shared a story that perfectly illustrates why home care is becoming the next wave of senior care, poised to surpass the traditional nursing home model.

“Back when I was 16 and my older brother was 18, we were taking care of my grandpa. We didn’t live too far away, maybe 15 minutes in the same town, but it got to the point where we kind of had to put him in a nursing home. He was there for maybe about two weeks when he called up my older brother and said, ‘Hey, do you want to go get lunch on Friday?’ My older brother was like, ‘Yeah, okay. I can leave a little early and come get you, and we can go get lunch.’ So my grandpa is like, ‘Okay, park outside. You don’t have to worry about signing me out or coming in. I’ll meet you outside.’ My brother pulls up, and my grandpa comes running out with his suitcase and says, ‘Take me home. I’m never going back.’ He went back home, and one of us was there to take care of him from then on.”

The Growing Need for Home Care

Mauser’s grandpa was fortunate to have a home to return to and a loving family to care for him. According to Tom Daschle and Tommy Thompson in “Who will care for America’s aging population?” nearly 70% of Americans who reach age 65 will, at some point, be unable to care for themselves without assistance. As people live longer due to advances in medicine, technology, and science, many, like Mauser’s grandpa, are reluctant to move out of their homes and lose their independence. And they shouldn’t have to.

America’s population is steadily aging, with 1 in 5 Americans projected to be 65 or older by 2030, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This demographic shift highlights the need for alternative care options that allow seniors to remain independent while still receiving the support they need.

Stay at Home with Boutique Home Care

New boutique home care options like Avida Homecare are emerging across the country to meet this growing need. “Imagine you have been in your home, and you have lived there for 30 years, and you don’t want to leave. And why should you have to?” said Raul Mendez, the founder of Avida.

Avida provides daily living services such as meal preparation, cleaning, and companionship, which are especially important for clients with dementia who may need reminders to take medications and complete other necessary tasks. Raul prioritizes investing in his staff as much as in client care, personally reaching out on a weekly or biweekly basis to ensure satisfaction. With a caregiver-to-client ratio of 1.5 to 2.2, Avida ensures that each client receives the attention they need. All caregivers have at least two years of experience and are led by a certified nursing assistant. Many are bilingual, speaking Spanish and Tagalog, to ensure care in the client’s preferred language.

Home care provides aging adults with more comfort, often leading to healthier living, as it can be customized to each client’s needs. In many cases, it can be as affordable as, or even less expensive than, nursing homes.

Investing in Learning and Connection

Raul’s personal experience with caregiving for his aging father drives his mission. He knows how challenging it can be for families to juggle full-time jobs, young children, and other obligations while caring for an aging loved one. Raul understands that care extends beyond the time spent on-site, encompassing the physical and mental well-being of his clients even when caregivers aren’t present.

This understanding led Raul to partner with GetSetUp, a digital adoption platform specifically for seniors. GetSetUp offers a customized bundle of classes that help clients fight loneliness and access ongoing learning opportunities, ultimately empowering them. The platform, where educators over 50 teach their peers how to use technology devices like smartphones and iPads, apps like Instagram, and services like rideshare and online shopping, plays a crucial role in keeping seniors connected and engaged.

The Benefits of Home Care and Lifelong Learning

Home care should ensure that people feel at home as they age and remain integral members of society. Teaching seniors how to participate in the digital world, use rideshare apps to attend appointments, or chat with their grandchildren via Zoom helps them stay connected, active, and healthy—both mentally and physically. Ultimately, investing in lifelong learning, regardless of age, is an investment in a person’s overall well-being.

As you consider the future for yourself or your aging loved ones, explore options that allow them to remain at home with the care and support they need to stay socially active, independent, and healthy.
