Retirement is a time for new beginnings and continuous learning. For Barbara, a 66-year-old resident of Maine, GetSetUp has opened doors to a wealth of knowledge and opportunities, enriching her personal and professional life.

Barbara was introduced to GetSetUp through her involvement with the Association for Training and Development (A4TD), a federally funded program that helps people 55+ learn new techniques and find jobs. The A4TD program is one of the federally funded Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) programs and they partner with GetSetUp to offer GetSetUp’s job skills training classes.

“I was taking courses in another program focused on certificates, but GetSetUp offered a refreshing break and more informative content, especially in computer classes,” she explains.

This shift allowed Barbara to explore new ideas and delve into topics that interested her, such as health, travel, and business. Barbara’s learning style is hands-on; she takes notes and revisits them, ensuring the information sticks.

“I have notebooks filled with information from the courses I’ve taken on GetSetUp. The Office Hours help and videos have been very beneficial,” she says.

She enjoys hearing other participants' questions, as often they ask questions she also has or she learns something new she hadn’t thought of before. Among the classes she finds most helpful are those focused on Google tools, including Sheets, Docs, Drive, and Keeps. These classes have broadened her digital skills significantly and helped her gain confidence for her upcoming new position with the Red Cross.

Barbara’s professional life is enriched by her participation in GetSetUp. She works remotely for the Red Cross and finds that the computer skills she has acquired are incredibly useful.

“Everything I do is remote, from taking calls for the Red Cross to making calls. The computer classes have helped me a lot,” she says.

This remote work is part of a four-year program that offers benefits such as subsidized housing, making her more financially independent.

“I have learned a lot more about remote working and prioritizing my time. I think learning how to manage my time is one of the most excellent things I have learned. That and setting boundaries, since we all need to learn how to do that.”

Exploring New Hobbies and Holistic Wellness

In addition to professional development, Barbara enjoys classes that cater to her hobbies and personal interests. In her free time, she teaches stitching and makes stuffed animals to donate to good classes. An avid stitcher and sewer since childhood, she has found the freedom to explore other hobby areas through GetSetUp.

“I love the travel classes and those focused on business, which help me do something productive for myself,” she shares.

She also participates in vision board classes and those related to setting and achieving goals, which have been instrumental in her personal growth. Barbara also prioritizes her health and wellness.

“I really enjoy the relaxation and weight loss classes. Even though I haven’t lost weight, I feel better overall,” she notes.

The nutrition classes, in particular, have been beneficial for her medical issues, providing her with valuable dietary insights and support from others facing similar challenges. Barbara appreciates the guides’ expertise and the community aspect of GetSetUp.

“I love the guides and how they explain things. It’s great to have something more to look at beyond my box,” she says, referring to her home living space as a box.

The program has given her confidence and the ability to explore various areas of communication and productivity that are beneficial in her remote work and personal projects. Barbara’s gratitude for GetSetUp is evident.

“I’m really thankful you have this program out there for so many people,” she concludes.

Through GetSetUp, Barbara has improved her skills and well-being and found a supportive community that encourages continuous learning and exploration.
