Live interactive learning opportunities taught by older adults for older adults make digital learning, connection, and exploration a reality

The Ventura County Area Agency on Aging (VCAAA) and GetSetUp have partnered to help the estimated 197,639 older adults aged 60 and older in Ventura County bridge the digital divide and combat social isolation through live interactive learning opportunities on GetSetUp, the largest and fastest-growing virtual learning platform designed specifically for older adults.

GetSetUp teaches older adults to use technology in a way that is comfortable and supportive, empowering participants to better access critical services and social connections.

GetSetUp’s customized platform offers an interface for older adults to learn, create, and share their wisdom safely. The platform helps to address the social determinants of health by assuring older adults stay connected to the tools they need to thrive and age in place. GetSetUp offers live interactive learning experiences that range from everyday technical skills to enrichment-focused courses including healthy cooking, virtual travel, and more. Plus all learning opportunities are taught live by experts who are older adults themselves.

Through GetSetUp’s custom-built video learning interface older adults can easily connect with a safe community of more than 4 million peers globally at the click of a button. Participants will have access to more than 500 classes that shift weekly to attend 24/7, from the comfort and safety of their homes through March 30th, 2023, or as long as classes are available. Additional benefits to learning through the platform include the ability to connect with family and friends via live video chats, which helps      to improve overall emotional wellness for individuals who are unable to see loved ones in person.

“We know that access to digital devices combined with the need for technical support and learning opportunities is critical for older adults and people with disabilities,” said Victoria Jump, Director of the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. “The COVID-19 crisis only emphasized these needs and shined a light on the fact that the populations we serve will experience an increase in their virtual needs, whether it’s video chats with family members or online appointments with medical professionals. We are eager to begin this partnership with GetSetUp to continue to tackle the digital divide head-on.”

“We hear learner feedback daily about how we are helping reduce social isolation, which is one of the leading causes of illness and death among older adults,” said Lawrence Kosick, President and Co-Founder of GetSetUp. “Older adults on our platform find peers that are passionate about similar topics. While learners may be alone physically at times, they don’t have to be lonely thanks to all the friendships and connection opportunities we are creating on GetSetUp. No matter where you are, social learning with friends is just a click away.”

Classes are currently offered in English, Spanish, Hindi, and Mandarin with additional language options to come. To learn more about the VCAAA’s partnership with GetSetUp visit https://www.getsetup.io/partner/ventura.
