Joanne is a retiree living in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, after a rich career in education, working at an herb farm, stringing for a newspaper, and diving into art and horticulture at a local museum. She worked at the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library in Winterthur, Delaware, for 22 years. These days, she’s still busy gardening, staying active with a walking buddy, volunteering, traveling when she can, and keeping up with friends and family. She often keeps up with them through thoughtful, handwritten birthday cards, often accompanied by photos she’s decluttered from old albums, a trick she learned on GetSetUp.
“Decluttering has become part of my rhythm,” she says. “I learned from GetSetUp that sending photos to family and friends is a meaningful way to clear space and connect. It’s such a great tip, and it stuck with me.”
Like many others, she first discovered GetSetUp during the pandemic.
“I think it was during COVID. I clicked on GetSetUp and liked what I saw. You were really stuck in the house, and other than walking the trails or working in the garden, there wasn’t much else to do. GetSetUp really saved a lot of people, I think.”
She leaned into the classes on travel and technology. She enjoyed more in-depth classes that helped her gain more knowledge, including some of the GetSetUp classes on travel and music.
“I enjoy some of the travel classes and those on topics like wine! I loved the in-depth music classes with explanations. They were intellectually stimulating and had a lot of depth.”
As her life opened back up post-pandemic, she found herself returning to the platform in new ways.
“I don’t sit at the computer as much anymore for classes, but instead, I use my iPad or phone. I love that I can jump on to classes at any time, even at 2 a.m., and catch a replay or something that catches my eye.”
Her experience with GetSetUp has been deeply empowering, especially in terms of technology.
“I was afraid of tech before. But these classes gave me confidence. I moved from a flip phone to an iPhone. I started texting, using WhatsApp, and now I use it to stay in touch with people overseas.”
That includes keeping in touch with a village in Europe where her late uncle, a WWII sniper and lookout, once helped save the community by warning of an incoming bombing.
“They honored him last year by placing a plaque on the hill where he stood. If I hadn’t learned these tech skills through GetSetUp, I might not have kept those friendships going. Now I use Whatsapp to stay in contact with the mayor.”
She still enjoys learning about travel, art, architecture, music, and classical composers like Bach on GetSetUp. Recently, she found herself hooked on a fashion and closet-organizing class.
“The Guide [Jackie] was so good. She helped me think about how to make clothes work for me now. I’ve really been watching her classes.”
GetSetUp has also sparked ideas for new things Joanne would love to see:
“I’m very into gardening now. I’d love to see classes on gardens of the world, something that combines travel, architecture, and garden history. And political topics too perhaps from former government folks sharing insights on the Constitution.”
She’s also looking to explore some of the new classes on GetSetUp’s AI Assistant, Helen. She’s seen AI all over the place and looking forward to knowing more about it.
“I tried Helen out on the GetSetUp site a bit and liked the answers she gave. She’s a simple way to find classes.”
She’s also passionate about libraries and recently completed a challenge to visit all 17 in her county.
“It was so eye-opening! Libraries today are incredible, with movies, speakers, music, computers, and button-making kits. They’re really trying to meet people where they are.
Ultimately, her journey is one of health, engagement, and personal growth.
“My life is getting shorter, so I’m being particular about what I choose. I want things with substance, meaty topics, and intellectual conversations. That’s what I appreciate about GetSetUp.”
And the people?
“I love all the people on GetSetUp. They’re all really nice. Carol helped me start my decluttering path. Jackie, who does fashion, has been so helpful. Everyone has their own way of helping others grow.
