Retired and living near the shore in New Jersey, Doris starts her days at the gym, followed by volunteering and managing her household. As she aged, Doris recognized the importance of staying mentally active and sought out opportunities to learn new skills, especially in technology.

“As you age, you’ve got to learn,” Doris said. “I grew up with typing machines, and now everything is on the computer. You have to pay bills online, and everyone wants emails instead of paper. That prompted me to take more technology classes.”

Now Doris finds that paying her bills online is easier. She’s continuing to stay interested in learning more about financial planning as well. She knows there is a lot more out there to help her continue learning and keep up with the technological changes.

“You don’t have to get a book to learn something now everything is on computers.”

Doris initially struggled to find adult education programs that fit her needs. She reached out to local libraries and colleges but found their offerings limited. There just wasn’t a lot in the way of adult education in her area.

“I would call the library and ask for technical classes, but they didn’t have them. I looked online, but I needed more than YouTube; I needed actual instructions.”

Her search in the last couple of months led her to GetSetUp, a platform offering free classes thanks to its partnership with the New Jersey Division of Aging. She started with basic computer and iPhone classes, which were crucial for helping her manage everyday tasks. When she first got her iPhone, the phone provider gave her the phone and a number and then told her she was ready to take it home.

“I asked about classes and they didn’t have any and didn’t even tell me how to use the phone. People don’t realize how much harder it is to use new technology for people who never grew up with it.”

In the end, her daughter helped her set it up, but the lack of resources made her weary of wanting to get a new phone in the future. However, now, with GetSetUp classes, she’s gaining confidence in her skills and learning new resources for her device.

“Classes have been helpful, but I need to keep working on my technology skills. I see how easy tech is for my grandchildren—they are in elementary school with Chromebooks. They show me how to do things, but they do it so fast, it’s hard to follow.”

Doris remains determined and continues to improve her confidence, especially with her iPhone and online banking, which her daughter initially helped set up for her.

Staying Connected and Engaged

Her classes also extend beyond technology. Since her Medicare monthly payment went up she’s looking for ways to save on health and wellness, especially as everything gets more expensive. Her United Healthcare Medicare plan offers savings, but she knows she has to research her benefits extensively to make sure she’s aware of the benefits available to her and taking full advantage of her plan.

I also took a cooking class on air fryers, which was very good and had simple recipes for healthy meals.”

Doris appreciates the flexibility of GetSetUp classes, which allows her to catch up on missed sessions by watching recorded ones. This flexibility is particularly useful during the winter months when she spends more time indoors.

She noted, “I find I do more classes in the wintertime when I don’t get out and about as much.”

Doris values the sense of community and support she finds in GetSetUp classes.

“Where I live, there are not a whole lot of things to do, so GetSetUp gives me access to reach out to people.”

While Doris stays pretty active during the summer time, the winter months can be more challenging for her. Even though two of her children live close by, she often finds that she has a lot more time on her hands now that she has stopped working.

“During the winter time, I experience issues with loneliness. I live alone in a rural area, and my children have their own lives. These classes help you deal with feelings you didn’t think you would have to deal with,” she said.

Once she stopped working, she realized she spent a lot more time at home than before, and that triggered different feelings than she had been used to. Now, by embracing technology and staying connected, Doris continues to lead an active, fulfilling life.

“I’m very happy with these classes. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know they are available and often free to older adults through their memberships and health plans. I share GetSetUp with everyone I can since the classes have been a great resource,” she concluded.
