The Oregon Department of Human Services: Aging and People with Disabilities (APD) has partnered with GetSetUp, an innovative virtual learning platform, to help combat the growing crisis of social isolation and loneliness among older adults. This collaboration is part of a statewide initiative funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to provide meaningful engagement opportunities that promote well-being, connection, and lifelong learning specifically to their Medicaid population.

Addressing a Public Health Epidemic

Social isolation and loneliness have been recognized as a global public health concern, with former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy identifying it as a priority issue in 2023. Studies by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) show that loneliness significantly impacts older adults—leading to declines in cognition, physical health, and increased vulnerability to financial exploitation.

In Oregon, APD serves low-income older adults and people with disabilities who are at an increased risk of isolation due to functional decline, loss of social networks, and other life transitions, and often Medicaid recipients. To address these challenges, APD sought innovative solutions that could scale quickly and provide real benefits to the communities it serves.

How GetSetUp is Making a Difference

GetSetUp is a peer-to-peer learning platform designed for older adults, offering thousands of interactive classes led by instructors who are also older adults. The platform provides a diverse range of topics, including:

  • Health & Wellness – Fitness classes, meditation, and nutrition tips
  • Technology Training – Helping older adults stay connected via Zoom, social media, and smart devices
  • Creative & Business Skills – Art, writing, and small business workshops
  • Social & Travel Clubs – Encouraging exploration and connection with like-minded individuals

Since its inception, GetSetUp has reached over 4 million older adults across 160 countries, with a strong presence in states such as New York, Michigan, California, Washington, and Florida. By offering interactive and accessible classes via smartphones, tablets, and computers, GetSetUp ensures that learners can participate from the comfort of their homes—breaking down barriers to engagement.

A Strategic Approach to Social Connection

Through this partnership, Oregon APD aims to reduce loneliness and improve social engagement for older adults statewide. By leveraging technology and peer-led learning, GetSetUp creates opportunities for older adults to build new relationships, stay active, and continue growing their skills.

“Loneliness is a silent health crisis affecting millions of older adults,” said Lawrence Kosick, President and Co-founder of GetSetUp. “Through our partnership with Oregon APD, we’re empowering older adults, especially those benefiting from Medicaid with opportunities to learn, connect, and stay engaged—helping them lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
